Five Ways to Prevent Diabetes

There are three main forms of diabetes: type 1, type 2 and gestational. Type 1 diabetes affects approximately five to 10 percent of the diabetic population. It occurs when the pancreatic cells cannot produce insulin.
Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body’s cells cannot use insulin. It affects 90-95 percent of diabetics, which makes it the most common. Gestational diabetes is a form of type 2 diabetes that occurs in pregnancy. It is estimated that eight percent of pregnant women will develop gestational diabetes.

Diabetes is a condition that can cause numerous complications, but it can be prevented in many cases. Below are five tips for preventing diabetes:

1.) Get plenty of physical activity
Physical activity helps the body maintain a healthy blood sugar level. It also helps a person maintain a normal body weight. Excess body weight has been linked to type 2 diabetes. Experts recommend that a person get at least 30 minutes of exercise in every day.

2.) Get plenty of fiber

Fiber is a nutrient that helps keep the blood sugar level stable. It is found in vegetables, oatmeal, seeds and nuts. People need to get between 25 and 30 grams of fiber per day.

3.) Eat lots of whole grains

Researchers have not been able to identify exactly how whole grains help prevent type 2 diabetes, but they have found that people who eat whole grains have a reduced risk of developing this condition. Brown rice and whole wheat pasta are examples of whole grains.

4.) Lose weight

Again, excess body weight has been linked to type 2 diabetes. People who lose a little bit of weight can greatly reduce their risk of developing diabetes. In fact, studies have shown that people who lose as little as five to 10 percent of their body weight may be able to reduce their risk of developing diabetes by up to 60 percent.

5.) Talk to your doctor about taking metformin if you are prediabetes

Millions of people have a condition called prediabetes. People are prediabetic have elevated blood sugar, but their blood sugar level is not high enough to be classified as diabetes. Studies have shown that people who take metformin, which is a drug that is used to treat type 2 diabetes, may have a reduced risk of developing diabetes.
