I didn’t go to college when I graduated from high school. I knew that I did not want to sit in a classroom for four more years. I wish I had thought more about the types of jobs I would be able to get with just a high school diploma though. There were not many, and the available ones were for minimum wage. I knew that I needed something more than that, so I started looking at the different options available to me. A friend suggested I look into phlebotomy certification because the training is not anywhere near as long as a traditional college degree.
I decided to look into this because I liked the shorter training period, plus I thought that it could be pretty interesting to work in the medical field. Another really nice thing is that I knew there would always be a job available that paid a lot more than minimum wage. First off, there will always be jobs in the medical field. It is not only patients in the hospital that need blood drawn. There are medical centers and doctor’s offices that work constantly because of the number of patients that need regular blood work done on them.
Since there is no way patients will need to stop having blood transfusions and blood work drawn to help diagnose different conditions, that meant that this would be guaranteed job security. I found a website that has a lot of information on it about the different requirements needed and what needs to be done to get certified. It did not take me long to get enrolled in a program at the local vocational school, and within six months I was certified. Not only have I nearly doubled the amount of money that I am making, but I actually enjoy what I do too.
